Contrec Series 500 - Steam and Gas Flow Computers, Energy Computers, Batch Controllers

Contrec 500 Series flow computers is the flow computer that's exactly what you want it to be. The design brief for Contrec's new flow and level computer was that it should be very easy to configure for a very wide range of flow and process applications.

Contrec's solution is a very flexible and robust hardware platform that can accept a wide variety of inputs and produce a wide variety of outputs for signal re-transmission, alarms and control. A unique software program has been designed to allow the instrument to be specifically configured for the user's application and which can then produce an application specific datasheet, manual and configuration report. The result is an economically priced intelligent instrument which can be used for fiscal accuracy oil, gas and steam metering; intelligent batch control; ratio blending; energy metering; fuel oil consumption; open channel flow and tank contents indication.

Outputs include two configurable isolated 4 - 20 mA or pulse retransmission signals; four fully assignable alarm relays; three communication ports, RS232, RS485 and IrDA with either ASCII and Modbus protocols. In addition to the real time display of parameters and totals, the 500 features a integral 1000 item data-logging facility which provides historic data and a useful back up in the event of a PC, DCS or SCADA communications breakdown.

Functionality

Natural Gas using turbine, orifice and other devices in accordance with either AGA-3 or ISO5167. Compressibility then calculated using AGA-8 or SGERG.

Steam and Condensate with frequency or analogue input, linear to flow or in accordance with ISO5167. Calculations in accordance with IAPWS-IF97 for superheated steam, saturated steam and saturated water.

Industrial Gases using ideal gas law or Redlich-Kwong equations.

Industrial liquids providing rate, total and cumulative total.

Petroleum Flow using the latest revised ASTM standards, includes crude oil, refined fuel oils LPG and lubricants.

Displayed Outputs
The front panel display shows the current values of the input variables and the results of the calculations. A list of the variables for this application and their type (total or rate) is shown at the end of this document along with the available units of measurement. The instrument can be supplied with a real-time clock for data logging of over 1000 entries of the variables as displayed on the main menu.


Communications
There are three communication ports available as follows:

• RS-232 port (standard)
• RS-485 port (advanced option)
• Infra-red port (on front panel)

The ports are available for remote data reading, printouts and for initial application loading of the instrument.


Isolated Outputs
The opto-isolated outputs can retransmit any main menu variable. The type of output is determined by the nature of the assigned variable.

Totals are output as pulses andrates are output as 4-20mA signals. One output is standard, a second output is available as an option.

Control the Flowrate or Ratio Blend
By integrating an intelligent PI control function into the 515, it’s possible to precisely control the flow rate, to control flow rates whilst batching and to ratio blend two fluids together. Clever functions like holding the output value on start stop and batching applications means that even small volumes can be blended without problems.

Ratio total trim correction means that batched quantities are always perfectly in ratio producing far higher quality product, plus with the datalogging facility, you have a detailed audit trail.


Net Oil Flow Computer
The 515 FN01 application calculates the net oil content in petroleum production fluids containing water. The net oil volume is corrected to a reference temperature according to ASTM D1250-04.

The instrument uses the frequency signal from a mass flowmeter along with temperature and density analog inputs. Reference densities for the oil and water are used in conjunction with live density and temperature values to determine the water cut.

Relay Outputs
The relay alarms can be assigned to any of the main menu variables of a rate type. The alarms can be fully configured including hysteresis. Two relays are standard with an additional two available in the advanced option.


Access to unused inputs via Modbus
The 500 Series is being used more often in conjunction with SCADA systems and reading the unused analog 4-20mA inputs via Modbus is  a convenient way to get access to extra data.

Similarly, the logic inputs can be used the same way providing valuable data like whether the pump is running or locked out, the status of valves etc

Software Configuration
The instrument can be further tailored to suit specific application needs including units of measurement, custom tags, second language or access levels. A distributor can configure these requirements before delivery.
Instrument parameters including units of measurement can be programmed in the field, according to the user access levels assigned to parameters by the distributor.
